Non-performing loans return to 3.8% in February/ Banking system remains below 4% threshold, reflecting stability

The non-performing loan ratio in the Albanian banking system fell again to 3.8% at the end of February 2026, returning to the level of December last year. Data from the “Bank of Albania” show that after a slight increase to 3.85% in January, the indicator corrected again in the following month, thus maintaining a low level and below the 4% threshold.
The movement of the first two months of the year shows that the quality of the loan portfolio remains stable, although the pace of improvement is not linear from month to month. In December 2025, the non-performing loan ratio was 3.8%, in January 2026 it rose slightly to 3.85%, while in February it returned to 3.8%.
In this way, the Albanian banking system continues to maintain the ratio of non-performing loans at levels considered healthy, confirming the continuation of the downward trend of recent years. The fact that the indicator remains below the 4% threshold is seen as a positive signal for the quality of lending and the ability of banks to cope with risks.
February data also shows that the banking system remains stable in other indicators. Liquid assets to total assets are calculated at 31.1%, up from 29.64% in December, indicating a strong liquidity position.
Capital indicators also show a slight downward movement, but remain at solid levels.
Overall, data for the first two months of 2026 shows a banking sector that maintains the quality of the loan portfolio and a good liquidity base, although with a slight softening of profitability and capital indicators.
