We consume less than half of Europeans/ Individual consumption index, we rank at the bottom of Europe and the region
The latest data from the European Statistical Agency, for the year 2024, show that an average Albanian consumes 41% of a European citizen. This figure has not changed much from the previous year, where again consumption above purchasing power maintained this figure. Thus, Albania continues to be the last country in Europe in this regard. In fact, we can say that it performs worse than some countries in the region. Although we are ranked at the bottom of European countries, it seems that Albania has narrowed the gap with Europe by 2 percentage points in terms of one of the most important indicators of well-being, namely consumption.
In 2024, the levels of actual individual consumption in the EU showed significant differences. Used as a measure of the material well-being of households, individual consumption per capita expressed in purchasing power standards ranged from 41% to 141% of the EU average. The data show that actual consumption per capita in our country is 2.4 times lower than that of an average European, an Italian or a Frenchman for example. Actual individual consumption is perhaps the most accurate indicator of well-being, as it is expressed in purchasing power standards, i.e. standardized according to the level of each country.
As in previous years, Luxembourg recorded the highest level of individual consumption per capita in the EU at 41% above the average, followed by Norway at 24% above the average and the Netherlands and Germany at 20% and 18% above the average. In 2024, 12 European countries recorded a per capita consumption above the EU average.
But how does the consumption of an Albanian compare to that of a citizen from Luxembourg? Compared to countries like Luxembourg, an Albanian consumes almost 3.4 times less, on average.
At the regional level, Albania, along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, are in last place, with the same level of consumption. Montenegrins seem to be the ones who live better in the region, with individual consumption at 68% of the average European. Meanwhile, Serbia and North Macedonia have this indicator at 56% and 49% of the average European.
'Scan Intel' has analyzed another indicator related to Gross Domestic Product per capita in European countries, but also in the region. Albania ranks second to last for this indicator as well, having a not so positive ranking in this aspect as well.
