Zuckerberg: Meta made a mistake with the advancement towards AI/ Facebook cut 10 percent of its workforce in May

META CEO Mark Zuckerberg has told employees that the social media giant made a mistake in transforming its workforce with artificial intelligence. Zuckerberg is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in artificial intelligence as he seeks to reshape his company’s internal operations around the technology, reflecting a broader pattern among large U.S. companies this year, particularly in the tech sector. Zuckerberg described the rapid advances in artificial intelligence and the challenges posed by the technology’s boom. “Given the complexity of these changes, we’ve made mistakes and we almost certainly will make more,” Zuckerberg said, adding that he is also “focused on providing as much stability as possible” when it comes to future organizational changes.
"I don't want to promise too much because the world is changing in ways that are beyond our control," he said, reiterating that Meta does not expect more cuts across all companies this year.
He said Meta will try to find new roles for employees reassigned to train AI models after the Facebook owner carried out a massive restructuring in May, laying off 10% of its global workforce and moving 7,000 employees to new initiatives related to AI workflows. “By creating new, important roles for people, it also allowed us to reduce the size of our teams, knowing that if we make mistakes in some places, we can move some people back,” Zuckerberg said.
The company plans to increase investment in team-building initiatives, Zuckerberg said, including higher budgets for out-of-office activities and is hosting a large-scale hackathon in July to foster cross-team collaboration and development of its latest designs.
